Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Shelton Intermediate School:

Updated 8/19/2011; check back again for more updates.

  1.  Will my student get a supply list for school?

No.  Due to the numerous teachers that each individual student has, we do not publish a supply list.  No teacher will require any specific supplies.  You should be comfortable just purchasing the basic supplies that your child will need for school.  On the first day, a student will only need a writing utensil and notepad.

2. WHAT IS HETEROGENEOUS GROUPING?

Most classes at SIS are grouped heterogeneously.  This means that students are grouped together regardless of ability level.  Teachers will be better able to differentiate their instructional strategies to meet each student's individual needs.  Because of this system, students will not be in the same group for the entire day, but rather will meet with a different group of peers each period.

3.  WHAT CLASSES ARE HOMOGENEOUSLY GROUPED?

Only the math classes will be grouped according to skill level.  There will be a standard math level into which most students will fall and an advanced math level for students who have met the requisite criteria.  Some students requiring more individualized instruction may meet with our special education staff as well.

4.  WHICH CLUSTERS WILL HAVE ADVANCED MATH CLASSES?

All clusters have an advanced math group.

5.  WHEN DOES SCHOOL BEGIN?

Just as in past years, the student school day begins at 8:00 A.M. Students have until the 8:15 bell to get to their homeroom class.  Students who are not in homeroom by 8:15 will be marked tardy unless arriving on a late bus.

6.  DOES SIS USE THE "PAY TO PARTICIPATE" PROGRAM?

Yes.  Please refer to the Shelton Athletics website for details.

7.  HOW DO I GET LUNCH?

Students may purchase hot lunch or they may purchase a-la-carte items, including milk.  The Point of Sale program will continue to be used. Students bring in checks before school and drop them off in the cafeteria at the appropriate receptacle.  Students’ names must be on the envelope and then credit will be assigned into the cafeteria computer system.  Students will sit at tables assigned to them by their teacher.  Tables must be left neat and clean when lunch is finished.  You can find menus and forms at our lunch program website.

8.  WHERE CAN I FIND BUS INFORMATION?

Students are encouraged to ride the bus to and from school whenever possible.  Students must take the bus assigned to them by the school system and will not be allowed to go home on a classmate’s bus.  Bus routes have been listed on the Shelton Public Schools transportation website.

9.  WHEN ARE INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS AND BAND PRACTICE?

Band lessons will be held daily during your child’s SSR time, adjacent to their lunch period.  The band will meet during Flex period on Wednesdays.  A jazz band will also be formed this year, and it will meet after school at the discretion of the adviser.

10.  WHAT IS THE “LOOPING CLUSTER”?

Cluster 7-4 will be looping during the next 2 years.  Seventh-grade students in this cluster will have the option of staying in this cluster for eighth grade.  This allows the students, parents, and teachers to form a bond and familiarity with one another.  Parents may opt out of looping at the end of seventh grade.

11.  WHERE CAN I GET MY USER NAME AND PASSWORD FOR THE INFINITE CAMPUS PARENT PORTAL?
