English is a four year requirement at Shelton High School. Students must successfully complete English I, II, III, and IV in succession as a requisite for graduation. Under no circumstances will a student be allowed to take these courses concurrently within a single academic year. Pre-approved accelerated English courses taken during the summer may be acceptable. Students are advised to consult with their school counselor prior to enrolling in such a course to ensure acceptance. Students may enroll in multiple English elective courses in a given year. Throughout their four years of high school English, students are expected to continuously develop their ability to think abstractly and to evaluate critically various types of literature (novels, plays, short stories, and poems). Grammar and vocabulary units may accompany each literary unit. Students are guided and encouraged to use their language correctly and effectively both in speaking and writing. Literary analyses and other critical papers are requirements.

Freshmen take World History which begins with a survey of prehistory and the origins of civilization and proceeds on through historical eras to the Renaissance and Reformation. Emphasis is placed on the contributions of prior civilizations to contemporary societies. The objectives of the course are for the student to develop: 1) a better understanding of the present through a study of the past, 2) intellectual curiosity and logical thinking, 3) a world-wide sense of social responsibility, 4) awareness of the common traditions and values we share with other peoples of the world, and 5) strategies and practice for the Connecticut Academic Performance Test. Freshmen are also encouraged to begin to take any social studies electives available to ninth graders to broaden and deepen their education in social studies.
Sophomores take Modern World History (some sophomore students may substitute Advanced Placement European History in its place) which continues to reinforce the learning objectives of the World History Course. The period studied begins with the Age of Absolutism and continues to modern times. The focus of the course includes both Western and non-western world events and their impact on the preparation for the Connecticut Academic Performance Test. Assignments and assessments will focus on the content areas and the development of persuasive writing skills and strategies. Sophomores are also encouraged to take any social studies electives available to tenth graders to broaden and deepen their education in the social studies.
Juniors are required to take U.S. History (or may substitute Advanced Placement U.S. History in its place). This course focuses on the development of the American way of life from its beginnings on the North American continent to present day. It emphasizes that the material comforts we enjoy, our governmental institutions that serve us so well, and the freedoms we cherish are products of many hands and many minds. This course is designed to guide students in understanding our heritage and preparing them for the responsibilities of citizenship.
Juniors and seniors are encouraged to broaden their scope of understanding and interest in the social sciences through the many electives offered to them. The scope of these elective courses focus on and emphasize in greater depth the fifteen social studies content standards defined by the State of

World Languages - Department Chair: Mrs. Karen Giordano
The World Languages Department offers a number of language learning opportunities from beginning levels to native speaker programs through Advanced Placement and UCONN courses. For both the college bound student and the student entering the work force after graduation, knowledge of another language is a highly desirable skill. Although a student is not required to take a world language in order to graduate, we urge students to pursue language studies. Students receive a diverse linguistic and cultural approach to languages and cultures of the world. Students also have opportunities to travel abroad and use the skills acquired.
