City of Shelton

Shelton is a suburban community in eastern Fairfield County, located along the banks of the Housatonic River and the industrialized Route 8 corridor. It encompasses approximately 31.4 square miles and has a population of approximately 40,000 people. There are five elementary schools (K - 4), one upper elementary school (5, 6), one intermediate school (7, 8), and one senior high school (9 - 12).

Shelton High School is organized in a "house" plan, which features a school within a school. The students are assigned to one of three houses for their length of study in the school. The teachers are also assigned to one of those three houses. Each house is administered by a Housemaster, with the Headmaster as the primary administrator in the school. Academic classes contain students who are tracked according to ability. Curriculum levels include Advanced Placement (AP), Honors, College Prep, Academic, and General Studies.

Students at Shelton Intermediate School are organized by grade into a cluster system. Each of the five clusters operates as its own entity within each grade level. Each cluster is made up of a cross section of students from all academic levels. Students rotate among the four teachers within the cluster. Academic area classes contain students from a similar ability level. All elective area classes contain a mixture of students from different ability levels. All students are grouped on the basis of teacher recommendations, academic performance and standardized test results.

At Perry Hill School, Shelton's newest educational facility, students in grades 5 and 6 receive instruction from a dyad team of teachers.  Each classroom is heterogeneously balanced.  Students 'loop' from fifth to sixth grade with their teachers to ensure continuity and improve students' peer and teacher relationships.

Each elementary school has developed its own personality and characteristics, under the direction of a full-time principal and a well-qualified staff. Continuity is maintained throughout the schools in such areas as academic curriculum and achievement testing.

The Shelton Public School System provides all students with educational programs and services that develop their skills, knowledge and attitudes enabling them to become productive and contributing members of an ever-changing society.
