Athletic Trainer
ATHLETIC TRAINING/SPORTS MEDICINE
Hello, my name is Nicole Yacobino and I am the Head Athletic Trainer at Shelton High School. The purpose of this web page is to familiarize the Shelton community with myself, explain what an Athletic Trainer does and to introduce you to my company, Select Physical Therapy.

I graduated from Catawba College in Salisbury NC in May 2007 with a BS degree in Athletic Training. In summer of 2006 I had the pleasure of interning with the Charlotte Knights, the minor league affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. In July 2007 I joined Select Physical Therapy and began working as the Certified Athletic Trainer for the Bridgeport Bluefish. I started at Shelton High School in April 2008.

WHAT IS AN ATHLETIC TRAINER:
Many people inquire about what a Certified Athletic Trainer is:
Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC) are recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) as an allied health care professional. ATC’s are highly educated and skilled professionals specializing in injury prevention, recognition, evaluation, assessment, immediate care, treatment and rehabilitation of orthopedic and musculoskeletal disciplines. As a part of the sports medicine team, the Certified Athletic Trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents.
In other words: If the medical care of an athlete was represented by an umbrella… the athlete would serve as the handle, the rest of the athlete’s support team would serve as the parts that make up the canopy and the Athletic Trainer would serve as the conduit or intermediary between the athlete and the rest of the support community.
An Athletic Trainer must be certified by the Board of Certification (BOC) by completing a four year degree at and accredited college or university and passing the Board of Certification Examination. In the State of Connecticut Athletic Trainers must also be licensed with the Department of Health.
A day in the life of an Athletic Trainer:
An Athletic trainer can be seen working in secondary schools, College/Universities, sports medicine clinics, with the military and industrial/commercial settings. On an average day you will find an ATC preparing athletes for practice or games through taping, bandaging, and bracing. You can see an ATC develop conditioning programs, and implement treatment and rehabilitation programs. ATC also evaluate injuries to determine their management and referral to physician or physical therapy if necessary.
Further information on Athletic Training can be found on the National Athletic Trainers’ Association webpage. www.nata.org
